Key Archaeological Highlights

Philae Temple

   – Dedicated to the goddess Isis, this stunning temple complex is located on Agilkia Island.

   – It is renowned for its intricate carvings, hieroglyphics and the dramatic relocation project undertaken to save it from flooding caused by the construction of the Aswan High Dam.

   – Visitors can enjoy a serene boat ride to the island while learning about its historical significance.

Unfinished Obelisk

   – Situated in a granite quarry, this enormous obelisk offers insights into Ancient Egyptian stone-carving techniques.

   – Believed to have been commissioned by Queen Hatshepsut, it would have been the largest obelisk ever erected if completed.

   – The site provides a fascinating glimpse into the challenges faced by ancient craftsmen.

Aswan High Dam

   – A marvel of modern engineering, the dam was completed in 1970 to control the Nile’s flow and generate hydroelectric power.

   – Though not ancient, it provides context on how modern projects have reshaped the area’s landscape and affected archaeological sites.
