Archaeological Highlights

Colossi of Memnon

These two massive stone statues depict Pharaoh Amenhotep III and have stood at the entrance to his mortuary temple for over 3,000 years. They are renowned for their grandeur and for once being believed to “sing” at dawn due to temperature changes causing vibrations in the stone. Though the temple itself is largely destroyed, the statues remain as an iconic gateway to ancient Thebes.

Valley of the Kings

This UNESCO World Heritage Site served as the burial ground for New Kingdom pharaohs (16th to 11th centuries BCE). The valley houses more than 60 tombs, including the famous tomb of Tutankhamun. Each tomb is elaborately decorated with vivid wall paintings depicting scenes from Egyptian mythology, offering insights into the beliefs and daily life of the ancient Egyptians.

Temple of Hatshepsut

Dedicated to Queen Hatshepsut, one of Ancient Egypt’s few female pharaohs, this mortuary temple is a masterpiece of ancient architecture. Nestled against a dramatic cliff face, the temple showcases intricate relief carvings depicting her reign, divine birth and trade expeditions to the land of Punt. Its symmetry and integration with the surrounding landscape reflect the Egyptians’ artistic and engineering expertise.
